I have done several weddings and receptions at these types of halls. All my experiences, have been great. Several couples took this route to save on money.
There are several things to check into before renting the hall.
Couples also had their receptions catered, had someone to help plan and decorate them. Many I've done myself alone and with the couples. They turned out extremely beautiful both ways and couples were very happy.

My husband and I had our wedding reception at the American Legion Hall in Northbrook, IL. It was not decorated wonderfully. But our reception was at night and in the winter 3 days after christmas. We had snowflakes hanging all over the hall. Mini Christmas tree's on every table. Beautifully decorated tree's throughout the women to cover not so pretty walls. There was a fire place with a fire that added to the decor. It was warm and friendly. 10 years later friends who married in expensive banquet halls and country clubs always comment how fun our wedding was. It was not hoity toity. It was relaxed and comfortable. We danced all night and had great food catered in. No one felt uncomfortable and everyone danced. It was wonderful. I am planning my 10 year anniversary party there and everyone is anxiously awaiting.
