Hi, I am getting married to a Colombian man in October. Can anyone tell me any Colombian wedding customs or traditions we can include in our ceremony. Also, does anybody know the recipe for Aguardienete, the Colombian wedding drink. Thank you.
Um, yeah, haha i noticed that many people are getting married to colombian men,so congratulations! (and good choice,may i add) so, as everyone has been saying, YES, regaton, because of course thats the music that is danced to in colombia now days and we have been taught how to dance to that kind of music since we were little. Okay, and food is the most important thing ever, because who likes hungry guests? plenty of empanadas, salsas (hot ones, a lot of people are accostomed to spicy foods). And yes, underage drinking is normal. (but of course, not too much :-) ) but believe me, children are offered alchohol on special occassions, theres nothing wrong with that!

Anyway, I am taking some serious notes here. I knew about the empanadas, but in my mexican culture i have found that ours is made mostly with fruit and sweet potatoes, while Colombian empenadas are with meat and potatoes. I have alot to learn. I´m colombian and live in Colombia and I was just looking for ideas for my graduation party and I found this and I just thought it was pretty funny to see all your messages. Well the think is that here our weddings are usually very elegant, champagne, beef, fish and chicken, rice or potatoes and some salad, I mean just like any restaurant food but the most important thing is the cake, we don´t use white or chocolate cake and would never use carrot cake, here we have what we called black cake (torta negra) and it´s a dark fruit cake that is covered with lots of wine, its great and it is probably the only thing that is eaten all over the country in all the important celebrations. Well hope you great parties, and please don´t forget music that´s the most important thing. Right now carnival parties are really in, you can probably find information in colombian magazines or news papers online.

I am Colombian born and raced , here are some traditions:
The groom gives 13 coins to the bride during the ceremony to signify that he will always be the provider.
The bride wears a penny in her shoe to make sure that she will never be without the basic necesities.
In some parts of the country the bride and groom are covered under a "mantilla" to signify their union under the same roof.
All other ceremony traditions are pretty much like the american catholic traditions.
The wedding gifts are normally brought to the bride's home a couple of nites before tha wedding when her parents host something like an "open house".
The wedding rings are almost always engraved with their names and their wedding date. (The groom will have the bride's name on his and the bride will have the groom's name on hers).
You probably know this by now but most colombians are late to every event. (Only because we let them get away with it :) ).
You should not attempt to make "aguardiente" it is a lot simpler just to buy it. "Nectar" is the best brand. Rom is also a traditional drink for all ocations and there are many combination drinks for it in all bar books.
