Bar Mitzvah Questions...

We are planning a bar mitzvah for my son and I have two questions I hope someone can help with :

1.  I would like to have the theme be tzedukah / charity / giving.  How can
I do this in the best way regarding invitations, centerpieces, place cards,
Etc... ?
Is it tacky to ask the guests to bring a small item to donate?

2. Our celebration will be a buffet with no cocktail hour. What order of
Events will work well and how can I prevent all 90 guests descending on the
Buffet at the same time? I want the process to go smoothly.  Maybe the kids
Should go up first?

Thanks for your help :)

Re: Bar Mitzvah Questions...
In my opinion it’s a good idea to ask the guests to bring with them something for donation.
And defiantly let the kids eat first.
Good luck with your Bar mitzvah! We just had our son Bar mitzvah last week.
All the best.

Re: Bar Mitzvah Questions...
It's not tacky to encourage giving. Many of my clients ask us to prepare gift baskets (with some theme in mind). After the Bar Mitzvah they donate them to a charity. We then place a note card on the gift basket/centerpiece telling guests to whom the centerpiece is being donated.
Re: food - there's no problem with your MC announcing tables and telling guests which table goes up next. If you're in the LA area please send me an e-mail for further assistance with centerpieces or entertainment. Alana. Entertainment Express (818) 780-4433

Re: Bar Mitzvah Questions...
If this is past your date, I hope your simcha went well. But, anyway, one of my friends purchased wicker baskets at a discount store, then went to a warehouse food store and bought lots and lots of non-perishable items which she placed in the baskets. She used shrink wrap on them and used the baskets as centerpieces for each table. After the event, she drove to a food bank and donated the goods.

Re: Bar Mitzvah Questions...
WITH THE PRICE OF FLOWERS - SPENDING THE MONEY TO DO CHARITY BASKETS IS A GREAT IDEA. I HAVE SEEN FOOD BASKETS - WOMEN GIFTS AND PRODUCTS TO BE SENT TO A BATTERED SHELTER OR STUFFED ANIMALS TO BE GIVEN TO THE CHILDREN'S HOSPITAL.. WHEN WRAPPED PRETTILY WITH A FEW BALLOONS TIED TO IT THEY LOOK GREAT.

SOME BUFFETS ARE GEARED WITH A SEPARATE STATION FOR THE KIDS WITH KID FRIENDLY FOOD BUT THE DJ USUALLY CAN HELP WITH THE FLOW OF TABLE.

MY SPECIALTY IS WRITING THE POETRY FOR CANDLELIGHTING CEREMONIES AND I HAVE DONE SEVERAL WITH A CHARITY THEME. A DONATION IS MADE FOR EACH GROUP WHO ARE BEING HONORED WITH APPROPRIATE CHARITIES AND I WORK IT INTO THE POEMS. IT IS A GREAT IDEA.
