Will the seniors be of varying ages and dexterity? This may help determine what type of games to suggest for your seniors. I`ve assisted several Senior homes that have people in all stages of dexterity as well as many senior parties in our area where the attendees were so agile it made me feel old !!

Do you have a particular theme in mind for the party? Are you "going back in time" for the b-day honoree? How about a casino night? Luau? A garden party for a lady or possibly a Two Stepping evening for a gentleman?

Hi!
I found your post on PartyPop requesting game ideas for a senior citizen`s party. There was a reply from someone to your post with questions for you about ages etc. But no ideas about game ideas were given in the reply on-line. I was wondering what you found out and if you could share a little with me. There is a senior party that our YMCA is hosting and I am one of the main planners for it. Thanks so much for your help!

I planned a party for an elderly aunt. The things I did all were about her.
One of ehr best recipes which everyone of us neices and nephews have asked her to make, is her famous poppyseed roll.

So, I found a few recipes in the cookbooks and put out a 8x11 sheet of paper with around 4-6 recipes including my aunts and I gave a prize for who could pick out Aunt Roses poppyseed recipe.

I also, went to the local drugstore and blew up a picutre of my aunt. A coupld different poses or her in a couple groups, and then tore them up in a bag and had everyone reach in for a piece. And the team who put together the first picture won a prize. It was a great ice breaker.

I am trying to help my Mom come up with some ideas for Senior citizen socials. If you have any game ideas and anything fun that all persons present can interact and do, please write me and let me know. I am not a Senior Citizen, so I do not have a clue. They are having a HeeHaw Skit this week. Each one of them are dressing the part of the character that they are representing. Any idea? I would love to hear from you. Thanks!!

I wouldn`t admit this to just anybody, but I used to love Hee Haw :o) If you have seen it or knows someone who has, there was one segment where someone offstage would shout, Hey Grandpa! What`s for supper?! and he would recite this L-O-N-G menu, like "Black-eyed peas and corn bread dressing, fresh-picked peas, corn on the cob, hot bicsuits, peach cobbler..." well you get the idea, and at the end of it, everyone would say, "MMMM, MMM!" really loud. As dumb as that sounds, it was pretty funny. That might be a nice `game` to play by having one start out and each one after calling out that item and an additional one to the menu. A nice memory game, and surely that age group will remember that skit.

So the announcer (you, whoever) will instruct everyone to shout, Hey Grandpa, what`s for dinner! and each one takes turns repeating and adding long detailed items to the menu. You say black-eyed peas, so I`d say black-eyed peas and corn bread, the next person would say those two and add a third. Each time a person forgets an item, the game could start over with that person.

Hope this helped a little. Will post more Hee Haw and senior stuff as it comes to me!

Here`s a game you might like to try. It is great for parties, groups, and even one-on-one.

Senior Sez is a trivia game designed just for SENIORS.
In fact, senior citizens helped create it.

Senior Sez is easy to play, fun, and non-intimidating. A variety
Of topics are covered in each game. The questions are brief, and scoring is simple too. Correct answers are rewarded with colorful wrist bands that are tallied at the end of each game.

Here`s a little more about what makes this game unique:

- There are just TWO possible answers to each question
- Play virtually ANYWHERE -- no pens, paper, or table required
- Participants may play "solo" or on a team -- in a group or one-on-one
- The VARIETY of questions promotes fairness and helps maintain players` interest
- Appropriate for MANY LEVELS of functioning

The game has a website, where you can learn more about it:

I`d like to learn about games for a mixed group of people, some senior citizens, to be used as mixers or just plan fun and laughter.

One game I came up with is " I can Remember" The leader starts out with the phrase, " I can remember when." and they recount a funny experience that happened to the birthday honoree. Each person adds to the story. It can be something that actually happened or something can be made up - ex: " Wouldn`t it have been funny if - " and create an alternative to the story. It usually ends up in peals of laughter.

I entertain seniors and one party favorite is regifting as we call it. We did this game at Christmas and now they want it once a month. Everyone brings something new that they got as a gift sometime in their past and they will never use. Gifts are unwrapped. Then each person draws a number from a hat, numbers are acording to how many gifts are on the table. One goes first and so one. Number one goes to the table and takes what they would like to have , then go down the line with all the other numbers. Then back to number one again, they then get to steal from the others if they would like. Well, by the end of the numbers, people are stealing all over the place. You can run thru the numbers as many times as you like. I find 3 times is the magic number to have fun and not get boring. They must give up the gift they chose if someone is stealing!!! have fun

I have played games with as active senior group on New Year`s Eve for several years. We play a variety of games and everyone participates and has fun.
Game 1: Mix about 500 small gold safety pins in an ice cream bucket along with dry oatmeal. Blind fold a person and time the person for say 5 minutes and let them see how many pins they can find in the dry oatmeal. Let each person have a turn (blind folded) and the one that finds the most wins a prize. Try it, this is very difficult, don`t peek.

2. Make up a list of questions that can be answered with yes or no. Make a circle with chairs, enough for each person playing. Ask a question and is a person can answer yes to a question, they should move to the seat on the right. The person sitting in that seat may not be able to answer yes to that particular question and will still be sitting there. So..they sit on their lap. Sometimes we have 4-5 people sitting on one chair and a lot of laughing. This is a lot of fun and questions are easy like, Do you have on brown shoes? or Do you have green eyes? or Do you own a concertible. Any questions will do. Lots of fun.
After games were over, I taught those that wanted to learn, how to play Bunco. Had about 7 tables of 4 wanting to learn. Have some other games.

I do a Xmas Party every year for 85 seniors. I go to my local politicians, who donate giveaways. Also to personal care or nursing homes, banks, agency of the aging, undertakers, local businesses (especially pizza shops). Buy plastic cups or mugs at church/garage sales or you may get them as giveaways. Put whatever you collect in the mug/glass.
If you get blue pens, put one pink one the someone`s cup. If you get white pill boxes put a blue one in the cup. Put a penny in one cup. Put a sticker on the bottom of the cup, etc. Have small prizes for each winner. You can use some of the larger giveaways as prizes. Seniors love it. Get single bingo cards and play sit-down bingo. Everyone stands up. You call a number. If person has that number on their card, they sit down. Continue calling numbers until only one person is standing - give the winner a prize. You can play this many times during the event. Once I bought fly swatters 3/$1 (then got 50% off) - gave everyone a swatter. Gave prizes for blue swatter w/dog sticker taped somewhere on the handle or a piece of red tape, or on the yellow one with a button taped to it, etc.
Buy one nice prize (maybe gift card at local grocery store (or maybe a nice dish, small centerpiece (donated by local florist, put it in a nicely wrapped big box. Have a box with individual names on pieces of paper. When party starts, call out a name, that person gets the box - BUT CANNOT OPEN IT! Every few minutes call out another name and the box must be passed to that person. Last person holding box gets it. Then give a small prize to the person whose name was called first. Get an old canning jar and fill it with buttons, pass it around to each guest with a paper to write their name and guess number of buttons. No duplicate guesses. Person guessing without going over wins a prize. I have many more ideas. I use ffive or six every year at the party. Hope this helps. I have already collected enough items to give each person at the 80 to 100 items.

Pass the buck: let the seniors sit in a circle, wrap any kind of item, put on the music, let them pass the item around, stop the music and the person holding the item gets it but are out. Start all over again untill everyone are out but has a item(gift). I did it one christmas lunch with the seniors, thy laughed and had so much fun enjoy. Alida

Thanks for all the great ideas. We played parachute games at our family camp last year, and it was a big hit since we had such a wide range of ages. The seniors really enjoyed holding the the handles and lifting so the toddlers could run underneath. And, all ages enjoyed the task of trying to keep tiny beach balls rolling and bouncing on the parachute. It does help if you have an abled body teen or adult that wants run around, pick up balls and through them back on the parachute so that the seniors and the wee ones can keep on playing!
