Save That Bridal Gown

I just had the most delightful conversation with my best friend and her four-year-old daughter. The topic was bridal gowns and I was left with a smile on my face for the rest of the day. In fact, I've been thinking about it ever since. Let me start at the beginning…

I was the matron of honor at my best friend Robin's wedding and I remember our many outings to bridal stores in search of the perfect wedding gown. Robin had an idea of what she wanted but hoped the right dress would present itself in the mirror as she tried on dress after dress.

We made appointments and decided that our first trip should be to a shop that sold discount bridal gowns. Robin told the salesgirl what styles she was interested in and was given several to try on. It was so fun watching her try on dresses and we both got a little emotional thinking about all the special times ahead. Robin narrowed it down to a modest bridal gown and we both made a mental note of its design so we could compare it to others she would try on.

Our next stop was to a huge bridal gown store in Beverly Hills. Robin was treated like a princess as we were whisked away to a large private dressing area and several designer bridal gowns were rolled in on a clothes rack. Robin carefully looked through the selection and chose five to try on. She wasn't sure if she wanted a true white gown so two of the dresses were off white Vera Wang bridal gowns. All the wedding gowns were simple in style with some beading and a full skirt. Robin wanted to indeed feel like a princess. She tried on another five when finished with the first. It was a wonderful feeling that Robin didn't want to end.

With each dress she tried on, Robin felt she was getting a clearer picture of what she wanted. There were so many bridal gown patterns to choose from that it was a little overwhelming in the beginning. We ended the appointment with a confident idea of what style looked good on Robin and we looked forward to the next appointment in two weeks.

We spent a few more weekends looking for the perfect bridal gown and when Robin had finally narrowed it down, we were joined by her mother and another bridesmaid for the final dress rehearsal. I forgot to mention that Robin's cousin was also getting married. She bought her plus size bridal gown at a nearby bridal salon and Robin wanted to be sure her gown was very different. To that end, Robin's wedding dress was very unique. It was from a collection of sweetheart bridal gowns and it fit Robin like it was made especially for her. We all agreed she was a radiant bride and knew she would take everyone's breath away.

That was twelve years ago. So yesterday I sat drinking coffee and talking with Robin and her third child, Lindsay. Lindsay is four and the most articulate little girl I've ever met. You can have a real conversation with her about topics above and beyond Barbie and Cinderella. Her mother was ordering another muffin when on this day Lindsay decided to tell me that she was going to wear her mom's bridal gown when she got married (We've had conversations ranging from ballet to port-a-potties but this really caught my attention.) She told me that she wanted to look just like her mom did on her wedding day and that her mom was saving her wedding dress for her and not her older sister. Being the mother of two boys I was delighted by this topic and wanted to discuss everything with her. Lindsay was so matter-of-fact and forthright that I could have sworn I was talking to someone much older.

I was intrigued by Lindsay's well-versed ideas and listened while imagining the bridal shower I would some day throw in her honor. When Robin returned to the table I filled her in on our talk and she smiled like she'd heard it all before. I don't remember ever talking about bridal gowns until I was 21 and engaged to me married. Sitting before me was a little girl who would surely have her whole wedding planned by the time she was 5 and at the ripe old age of four was discussing designer bridal gowns.

I told Robin that as far as bridal gown bargains go, she was in luck (one less thing for the parents of the bride to pay for). And if indeed Lindsay succeeded in repeating her mother's look, what a special moment that would be. The three of us giggled thinking about the modest bridal gowns worn 40 years ago and wondered what the style would be when Lindsay did get married. She said she didn't care what it was. She already had her bridal gown picked out.
