Eight years ago, Cynthia Smalley was another struggling actress. But when she became frustrated over not being able to get a natural-looking headshot, Smalley switched focus. With a few pointers from other photographers, Smalley taught herself photography, and today, at 34, she singlehandedly juggles successful studios in San Francisco and Los Angeles and a thriving volunteer life. She is an integral part of a charity devoted to introducing inner-city kids to the fresh air of ranch life. Smalley and her crew teach the kids to ride horses, clean stalls, and enjoy the open range.
