Harpists

Alice Spero Keene is currently a freelance harpist, enjoying a busy schedule as a soloist, clinician, and orchestral performer, while maintaining an active teaching studio. Mrs. Keene is a native of Michigan and majored in harp performance at Indiana University and The University of Michigan. Her professional resume includes a twelve year tenure as Professor of Harp at the University of Illinois within a career encompassing solo recitals, musical theater, opera, ballet, master classes, clinics, and performances with numerous orchestras across the country including the Tucson Symphony, Springfield, Midland and Saginaw Symphonies; Sinfonia da Camera (at Carnegie Hall, NY); U.S. Marine Band of Washington D.C. ("The President's Own"); and The London Royal Philharmonic Orchestra (on tour). She has accompanied and performed with some of the world's leading artists including Itzhak Perlman, Van Cliburn, Marilyn Horne, Dawn Upshaw, Richard Stoltzman, John Williams, The Moody Blues, and Marvin Hamlisch.

Since relocating to Texas in 2008, Prof. Keene has developed a studio which includes students from several middle and high schools in the greater San Antonio area. Additionally, she is involved with harp ensembles and presents demonstrations and performances at several local schools. She remains in demand as an orchestral performer; recent performances include the Midwest International Band and Orchestra Clinic in Chicago, Texas Bandmasters Association Convention, as well as performances in Florida, Mississippi, the Rio Grande Valley, and San Antonio area. Most recently, she presented a special invited performance for President George W. Bush.

Many of her former students have been awarded scholarships and assistantships to major university schools of music. Her alumni include university teachers, orchestral and solo performers throughout the United States.

Mrs. Keene is active in the American Harp Society, serving as Regional Director, an elected position she held from 1994 to 1997. In 2012, Alice Keene was elected to the American Harp Society Foundation, serving secretary of the Board of Directors.
