A graduate of UNC-Chapel Hill as well as the prestigious Guitar Institute of Technology in Hollywood, CA, Riley s been a working professional musician since 1972. He performs classical, jazz, rock, country, pop and blues - often in the same show! He won Gigmasters coveted 2013 Rising Star and Best of awards for 2012, 2013 and 2014.
A full time private teacher, he s helped over 4,000 students master the guitar, bass and voice since since 1985. Riley s a prolific writer with publications like Electronic Musician, Gig, Guitar World, 'Guitar School, Vintage Guitar magazines and L2Pnet. Frustrated with conventional instruction methods for guitar, he wrote and published Guitar Made Simpler- An Intelligent Approach in 2005.
Riley does solo guitar and vocal gigs as well as his One Man Band, duo and trio shows I've been doing solo gigs for over 20 years, and perform duo and trio gigs on occasion. I've done corporate, private and public shows, for a wide variety of clients and performances. etc. I do my best to ensure my performance is precisely what the client wants, he details. Everything from pool parties in shorts to formal black tie tuxedo shows. I add Bryan Stroud on keyboards for duo gigs and a drummer for trio shows with larger events and budgets.
People invariable ask me about what kind of music I perform. I do traditional classical guitar pieces for weddings like the Canon In D, the Wedding March, Bach s Bouree, Mood for a Day and many other beautiful solo guitar pieces on nylon string. I love smooth jazz as well as traditional material and play current material by Larry Carlton, Ottmar Liebert and Ronnie Jordan, as well as Brazilian and American traditional jazz like Wave, One Note Samba, Blue Bossa, A Foggy Day, etc. I enjoy many types of pop material from traditional performers like Simon & Garfunkel, James Taylor and Jim Croce to current favorites like Jack Johnson and John Mayer. I love to rock and play everything from the 60 s( Beatles, Van Morrison) to the 70 s (Lynryd Skynyrd, ZZ Top and Bob Seger) to the 80 s (Journey, Romantics, Chris Isaak), 90 s (Jimmy Eat World, Matchbox 20) and beyond. I do tons of country, including traditional artists like Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson and Merle Haggard to classics from Garth Brooks, Alan Jackson and George Strait to Texas and Red Dirt artists like Pat Green, Randy Rogers and Stoney Larue to contemporary hits from Kenny Chesney, David Nail and Blake Shelton. I have over eight hours of material I can perform without repeating anything.
