Columbus Day

Columbus Day

Honoring the explorer Christopher Columbus, Columbus Day is observed on the second Monday of each October. Christopher Columbus “sailed the ocean blue in 1492”, and founded the New World that we now know as the United States. For those who still celebrate this day, it is mostly celebrated for the children to understand. Put on a puppet show that can educate the kids on what Columbus Day is really about and where it stems from. Have a look-alike and a band come and tell the story of sailing the ocean and finding this land, while the children sing-along to songs like “All Around the Big Wide World” and “Columbus Sailed the Ocean Blue.”

As we know, Columbus sailed in a ship, so rent out a large jumper in the shape of a ship for everyone to enjoy. Decorate the house with blue streamers, continental maps, and sculpture balloons that look like ships. Invest in a fun piñata and carnival games like pin the tail on the donkey, or a dunk tank. What’s a party without cookies and other treats? Make cookies in the shape of boats, or frost cupcakes to look like the ocean. Order a custom cake to represent Christopher Columbus on the ocean, approaching land. Use your creativity to work up and organize a great, educational party for all of the kids, and even the adults.

Boss’s Day

Boss’s Day

Boss’s Day is devoted to all employers; some individuals dedicate it to their supervisors for supporting the staff with their careers or jobs. Some will give their bosses cards, personalized mugs, gift cards, flowers, or gift baskets on Boss’s Day. This day is a time to recognize the hard work that the boss has to put into running the business, as well as, a time to strengthen the bond between the boss and employee.

Decorating the office, or workplace, with balloons and streamers can be a pleasing aspect for when your boss arrives. Often, employees will plan to bring small gifts to work with them and just get on with their day at work. Sometimes, they will arrange a potluck or have someone cater for lunch to honor their boss. Other ideas might include asking the boss to take the entire day from work to honor him or her, and to recognize the strength between him or her and the employees. If allowed, it would be fun to arrange some team building activities, or maybe even a one day retreat. Some bosses might be a fan of this idea and might think to take everyone on a yacht cruise, or take a limousine or party bus around town to site see. Other bosses might even be down for heading to a strip club later in the evening, or having a boss party and hiring some strippers.

Hold an after party at a country club, a restaurant, a banquet hall, a meeting room, or even a pub! Bosses aren’t always as uptight as they are stereotyped to be. Have some fun with them and make sure you make them feel appreciated for being an awesome boss.

Sukkot

Sukkot

If there was ever a time to be positive and upbeat, Sukkot is the time; as a matter of fact, it’s about seven to eight days of positivity and thankfulness toward God. Sukkot is a Jewish holiday in which the people are encouraged to reflect on the good fortune over the past year and celebrate God’s role in their lives. Some don’t go to work on the first two days, as a demonstration of respect to God. Specific prayers are completed each day.

Traditionally, Jews will build what’s called a Sukkah; it is supposed to represent the small huts that Moses and the Israelites would use as shelter during their journey through the desert. They are built to stand against the wind. The roofs are to be made of plants, foliage, flowers, and other matters of nature. They are to be decorated with homemade décor such as religious drawings or stained glass. You can gather your children and airbrush some religious images to put up on the walls.

Families will gather and feast inside of it while some will go as far as to sleep in it for seven days. Prepare a Hebrew meal that includes foods such as stuffed cabbage, harvested vegetables, and other items made with pastries and honey. Gather a collection of your favorite traditional music or melodies and have someone act as a DJ for the evening. Present a stage or platform for a dance floor, as this is a time for rejoicing!
