Technology: JVC D-ILA (Direct Drive Image Light Amplifier) proprietary projector technology delivers what conventional LCD and DLP designs only promise. Current JVC D-ILA projectors lead the competition in creating the standard for High Definition images. With the highest pixel density in the industry, D-ILA packs 1.4 million pixels onto a 0.9" chip at a resolution of 1365 X 1024 (SXGA3) combined with a record 93% fill factor (less space between pixels). Video Projector Rentals: How to Make the Right Choice

Keeping up with current video projector technologies has been as difficult to follow for most of us as watching our last desktop/laptop computer purchase become last months news. While most of our video purchasing habits are cultivated in the local mass market AV retailer, rarely are we treated to the side by side comparisons (like those rows of TVs on the wall) for a projector purchase...let alone a rental. When the focus departs from a qualitative end result to a matrix of specs and costs, we are too often forced into the proverbial "crapshoot" decision mode.

As this reality sets in, most event planners unfamiliar with the latest trends in projection fare resort to utilizing the least common denominator I refer to as the "lumens and dollars" (L/D) ratio. Lumens are a measurement of light output using a variety of industry standard tests. When brighter is generally considered better, the objective is reduced to using a claimed specification (which varies in truth from unit to unit, for a variety of reasons) thereby looking for the highest number of lumens for the buck (daily rental cost).

In the course of using this simple approach, the buyer is often unaware of the technology that is brought to bear on the actual end result. It is very often the case that higher lumen outputs are accompanied by an optical block (the core engine technology that produces the picture) resolution not up to the task from a qualitative point of view. PowerPoint is, by far, the most common business application for video projectors. As such, the demands for such static information placed on the projector are far less than motion video. This is where the evaluation of resolution, typically XGA, (1024 x 768 pixels) vs. SVGA, (800 x 600 pixels) comes into play. Less expensive SVGA projectors with high L/D ratios are often a poor substitute for lesser XGA L/D ratios. In short, the people in the front row are not subjected to a highly pixilated, "blocky" image and those in the back won't be struggling to read the fine print. Go with XGA or better in ALL your projector rentals. To do anything less will result in an image not worthy of the company being represented.

So when you hear those descriptions of LCD, DLP or D-ILA (LCOS), rather than swimming in the "sea of acronym", call a professional that really knows about, sells and rents all three core optical technologies. Each has its strengths and weaknesses, depending on the application. A competent videophile can guide you through the best match based on real world conditions, such as: venue and audience size, screen size, ambient lighting conditions, front or rear projection and lastly, projector selection. The end results are largely based on experiential use of the various technologies. Outdated or poorly maintained video projectors are too often rented as substitutes for edge of the art selections based on the dreaded L/D ratio. Your customer will appreciate the results and complain less about the image solution you have selected when all goes well. Avoid surprises by selecting vendors who support the above criteria. You will be glad you did.
