Cold Spring Jazz Quartet - Jazz Bands
For a decade Cold Spring Jazz Quartet has appeared regularly in nightclubs, weddings, restaurants and bookstores in the Baltimore-Washington area, winning a broad and loyal following.

Favorite venues for Cold Spring Jazz Quartet have included Bayou Blues Cafe, Pebbles Pub, Canton’s Pearls and The King of France Tavern of the Maryland Inn. Recent private engagements have included WYPR’s “Sip and Swing” fundraiser, Stella Maris’s annual wine-tasting event, and a featured concert and lecture in the 2005 Jammin’ at the Mansion. In addition to their work in CSJQ, the members have performed in numerous regional jazz groups, including Shades of Blue, Spats, and The Charm City Jazz Giants.

CSJQ recently released their debut CD, Same Place. Different Time. The thirteen-tune collection showcases the group’s versatility. It presents passionate performances of classic bop and hard bop instrumentals such as Bud Powell’s “Webb City,” Dexter Gordon’s “Cheesecake,” and Kenny Dorham’s “Short Story,” along with pianist Brian Smith’s four distinctive compositions: the lovely title ballad; two Latin pieces, “Quiet Are the Nights” and “Imagine That”; and his haunting 3/4 tune “Winter Wind.” You’ll tap your feet to the group’s exciting renditions of Mark Osteen’s gospel-inflected romp, “The Amen Corner,” and his update of the twelve-bar blues form in “Cam’s Blues.” Osteen’s vocals, which distinguish CSJQ from most straight-ahead jazz groups, reflect the influence of great singers such as Nat “King” Cole, Mark Murphy and Kurt Elling, lending songs such as “Doxy,” “The Old Country,” and “It’s All Right With Me” a distinctive flavor. Mixing vocals and instrumentals, classics and new compositions, CSJQ offers a rich menu for any music lover.
