Christmas Wedding

Hi, My fiance and I are planning on getting married this Christmas. We don`t want to dish out a lot of money, me being a student. Something very small, but nice. I haven`t attended Church in years and he has never attended on a regualr basis. We would like something in the Halifax area or not too far away. I have lots of good ideas but I have no idea where to begin. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Are you planning on being married in a church, despite your not having attended regularly in a long time?

One surprise we got when planning ours was the fee the church charged to marry us. We go to a United church, and it was over $300 even for a regular member of the congregation. If you are not a regular attendee there, the price goes up to over $500.

For the reception, try the Royal Canadian Legion. We looked at hotels first, but in Halifax they start at about $23 per person. Only one was that low, the rest were about $29 and up. The Legion is providing our catering for $13 per person, including tax, which is much more affordable. I`ve had their food before, they do a very nice meal, so no worries there.

Wedding gown, try Betty`s in Dartmouth, where you can rent your gown for $300. Winchester`s, don`t even bother. They rip out the tags, and I found them to be a little less than honest on this and a few other things. The Wedding Parlor in Truro also does rentals. I purchased my gown there, and they treated me just fantastically, I was really pleased with them.

Even though we`ve tried to do this as inexpensively as we could, it`s still turning into big bucks! Much more than we thought it would.

Good luck!

We`re also planning a December wedding. Second for me and first for him. He has a great big family, so a small wedding is not an option. Our plans to cut costs:
1) We`re getting married at the Air Force Chapel in his hometown (he`s military). They`ll have a Christmas tree already up in the chapel. We`re only decorating the first two rows of pews, those w/ ribbon and firs only.
2) Having a reception at the club on base. (Small fee)
3) Getting married at 7pm in evening (after dinner!)
4) Having `potluck` dessert reception. (His aunts, grandmas, etc are all making varies desserts, plus catering some too.)
5) Got my dress on eBay
6) I`m looking on eBay for silk flowers instead of real.
7) Printing our own invitations w/ our laser printer.
8) We`re not having any attendants, only a flower girl & ring bearer (his neice/newphew) and bought their outfits again on eBay.
9) We`re planning on a special moment w/ our parents to sign marriage certificate. My father for me, his mother for him.
10) We`ve started making our own CD for music. We both enjoy country. So it will be a collection of our favorites.
11) We bought 2 dozen disposable cameras for people to take pictures with. Plus we`re having our pictures taken before the ceremony, that way we only need the photograher for a short time.

What I`m struggling w/ the theme of our invitations. I haven`t found regular wedding invitations that fit, I`m actually thinking about printing on blank Christmas cards? What do you think?

The second thing is gifts. By the time we get married, we`ll have all of our household goods packaged for shipment to Japan, where we`re transferring to immediately after getting married. (1) We don`t need much, (2) it will be expensive to ship (3) we don`t like the idea of mentioning $$ in place of gifts. Any ideas??
