She is a dancer whose clean technique, intricate layering, grace, and sincerity have made her a favorite among audiences throughout the surrounding areas. She is drawn to the exotic rhythms and rich sounds of Arabic, Greek, and Turkish music and has studied belly dance passionately ever since.

Profile

She teaches American cabaret belly dancing, which pulls from all of the styles that she loves: Egyptian, Lebanese, Turkish, Greek, and even some ballet, jazz, and Latin dancing. Her repertoire is well-rounded, including finger cymbals, veil, cane, floorwork, drum solo, balancing objects such as a sword, shamadan, or candle tray, and more.

She has studied with many excellent belly dance performers and teachers from around the world during her and more years of belly dance study, and her style reflects that. Cabaret style is the glitzy style that most people envision when they think of the prototypical belly dancer. There are other styles such as American Tribal that I do not teach, but I will be happy to refer you to local teachers who do if you are interested. Belly dance, like most art forms, is very diverse and has many influences.

Her study of belly dance took her to Egypt in , where she experienced first-hand the passion and intense beauty of Egyptian music and dance. In , Sofia earned the Journey Through Egypt and certifications from highly respected Egyptian dance expert Sahra Saeeda.    Inspired tremendously by her experiences in this art form, Sofia aims to provide joy and beauty to every performance and every class she teaches. She remains an avid student of belly dance, regularly studying with reknowned teachers from all over the world in workshops, intensives, and private lessons.

Ideally, workout clothes such as yoga or dance pants and a form-fitting top that arefortable but allow her to see what your body is doing. A form fitting t-shirt, tank top, crop top, or exercise bra is fine. However, if you are notfortable wearing form fitting clothes, you may wear something loose. The important thing is that you befortable in class. Additionally, it is helpful to wear something tied around your hips to highlight your hip movements in class. You can use any shawl for this or an actual hip scarf made for belly dancing. She has some hip scarves for sale ranging from $ to $, or you can purchase one online.
