Born in West Bengal, Devapriya (Debu) Nayak started to learn the art of the tabla at the early age of three from his grandfather, an aplished tabla and pakhawaj player of the Punjab Gharana. He later became one of Pt. Radhakanta Nandi of the Benaras Gharana's esteemed disciples, and in 1981, came to the US, intent on pursuing higher studies and continuing his tabla taalim from renowned Maestros such as Pandit Anindo Chattergee, Pt. Samir Chatterjee, and Ustad Zakir Hussain.

Featured in the CD, Probe , he joined a collaborative effort of Classical Indian music and Jazz with his tabla. The members of Probe and he have played for the Smithsonian Institution and Debu has even performed with Gaurav Majumdar at the Kennedy Center, earning him accolades accross the board and in the Washington music circle. By profession, Debu is aputer engineer, employed by the US Department of Education, but his ultimate passion will always be music. Working double as director of the Washington DC Chapter of Chhandayan, he promotes Indian Classical music and tabla at his school and offers classes for students interested in the art.

Debu is currently a 'Ganda Bandha' shishya of Pt. Samir Chatterjee and can claim many aplishments in the realms of apaniment and solo performance. He's performed with artists like Ustad Fahimuddin Dagar, Asif Ali Khan, and Pt. Vinayak Torvi, among others and continues to fall in love with his craft every day. ClassesFor those ready to take up the tabla, classes are offered for every student, whether they're beginner, intermediate, or advanced. Each class is taught with special care on a one-on-one basis.
Debu Nayak has joined the faculty of Washington Conservatory of Music at Bethesda Maryland. He will be teaching Tabla drums at the Conservatory.
